Datasheet about Slavery in Pakistan

Hi, I wanted to write an article about slavery in Pakistan but I realized that there was no datasheet which presents it quickly, so I decided to make one. If you have any idea on how to improve it don't hesitate to let me know.

Basic informations about slavery in Pakistan

Population in 2014 : 188 million

Population under a form of modern slavery : Between 2 and 4 million

World rank in absolute value : 3rd (behind India and China)

Percentage of slaves compared to the population : Between 1.06 and 2.12%

World rank in percentage : 3rd (behind Mauritania and Haiti)

Salary and industry :

Average yearly salary : 2 000$

What do exploited children do :

  • Agriculture : 2.4 million
  • Panhandle : 1.2 million
  • Brick kiln industry : 1.1 million children
  • Carpet industry : 500.000 children
  • Prostitution : About 30.000 minors

What does the law say : through a series of laws, the central government has tried to tackle child labor and slavery during the 1990's, but the problem is that laws aren't respected at all in remote provinces and hardly more in the other areas. The thing is there is no real will to make it works. Central government declares it will fight child exploitation but the truth is that the great majority of people need the help of their children to make ends meet.

Shocking datas :

90% of Pakistani carpets are made by children aged between 4 and 14 years old and working full-time.

2.000$ : that's the price of a good carpet in the USA. It's also what the child who did it could earn if he worked six days a week, 14 hours a day during 5 years ! As you can guess, besides being exploited, children are underpaid).

Some parents sell their children as slaves. Several years ago Nike has been involved in such a case, when authorities discovered that children working in its factories were slaves.
