Yazidi women reduces in slavery by Islamic State
I guess it's useless to present the Islamic State (IS), unfortunately. Ubiquitous in the newspapers, it does not go a day without talking about the fight taking place for months against the radical organization. While most of the articles focus on the military aspects or regular hostage taking, I would like to mention here the fate of those in the shadow of these radical fighters. Indeed, in addition to its retrograde ideas, IS is also involved in the resurgence of modern slavery, in particular by exploiting Yazidi population.
This is another facet of IS, less known, but hiding a real humanitarian catastrophe. Last October, the NGO Human Rights Watch published a report on the fate of the Yazidis, this multimillennial religious community based in Iraq which is persecuted and enslaved by Islamists. The report is based on the testimonies of women who have managed to escape, sometimes after long weeks of captivity. This is the case of Naveen for example, a mother of four young children, who explains how she has been emprisoned during more than one month, waiting to be bought by a mujahedeen, as if she was a commodity.
At that time (in October), the NGO believes that "hundreds of women and girls are affected." Two months later, it is rather thousands that are mentioned, with more and more sordid details. In December, for example, we learned the publication of a "sexual slavery guide" by the IS. Last November, the testimony of a 19 year old former slave described a new facet of the horrors perpetrated by the self-proclaimed caliphate. We already knew populations were persecuted, but until that testimony we didn't have that much details. The girl, identified as Jana (not her real name), tells her story to CNN, during a more than one hour testimony.
Treated like cattle. They've been exposed in markets in Mosul and in Raqqa, Syria, carrying price tags
She tells first how jihadists forced them to convert to Islam, and how they separated men and women after having robbed all their valuables. While men are executed, women (or girls) are crammed into houses, "properly dressed" and then sold in markets. Similar to livestock, it is not uncommon to see a man buying three or four women, as if he was buying goats.
According to Dr. Bagikhany, from the Research Centre on Gender and Violence of the Bristol University, IS would have kidnapped more than 2,500 Yazidi women, while activist (Narin Shiekh Shamo) estimates this numer to 4 601 ! Below there is a link to a petition. It aims to show our solidarity to Yazidi's fate and encourage major international bodies to act. It only takes 30 seconds to sign and share so please, do it !
