Fishing slavery in Thailand : which solution ?

As I've already written about it (see here), a large-scale investigation was launched in the thai fishing industry six months ago. The results was pathetic : we learnt that Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF), the world’s biggest shrimp farmer, purchased fishmeal from companies that "own, operate, or buy" from vessels employing slave labor.

It appears that workers were reportedly tortured and executed. Is this shocking news surprising ? Nope, and that's the most depressing. Indeed in March this year a report from the human rights charity Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) found evidence of trafficking, exploitation, and human rights abuses within the $7 billion industry. Once again that's the proof that for too many people money is above human respect.

So what can we do against it ? Donation is not the only limit. If companies are only interested in money we have to act in consequence. Tesco, Walmart, Morrisons and many other companies bought fish from Charoen Pokphand Foods. It's hard to believe they didn't know what happened.

One by one, western companies announces they won't buy CPS products anymore, but the only reason why they do so is because CPS have been caught. It's not a question of ethic, it's only a question of reputation for them.

If we want to change it, we have to boycott companies who are not transparent about the origins of their products.
